Google’s algorithms are a system of complex rules that give users useful and relevant Google search results. The giant search engine makes around 500-600 updates to its algorithms a year. While some go unnoticed, others have a significant impact on the SERPs (such as Google Penguin and Google Panda).
In 2018, Google rolled out three broad core ranking updates, which caused a massive disruption in the search results. Since then, we’ve been anticipating another big core update. It finally made its appearance on March 12, 2019. Google recently confirmed the release of a core algorithm update and named it “March 2019 Core Update.”
So how does this impact your website? At this time, it’s too early to tell, and Google offered no specific details regarding the nature of the update. However, data shows the core updates target a broad range of quality issues and site categories. While some say this update was explicitly related to the health/medical niche, it’s clear this update was much broader.
Although Google claims there is no “fix” for their core updates, they shared the following advice on Twitter after last year’s broad core algorithm update:
“Each day, Google usually releases one or more changes designed to improve our results. Some are focused around specific improvements. Some are broad changes. Last week, we released a broad core algorithm update. We do these routinely several times per year. As with any update, some sites may note drops or gains. There’s nothing wrong with pages that may now perform less well. Instead, it’s that changes to our systems are benefiting pages that were previously under-rewarded. There’s no “fix” for pages that may perform less well other than to remain focused on building great content. Over time, it may be that your content may rise relative to other pages.”
